The Hierophant

Venus in Taurus.
Number 5:  Dynamic force; the Pentagram has 5 points.

Teacher, spiritual guide, mentor, master – all words used to describe the role The Hierophant plays. Being the 5th card in the Major Arcana, he brings life-changing events in which you have no control. He speaks of conformity, tradition, authority, and established beliefs, as well as captivity and servitude.

The cloaked figure sits upon his skull-encrusted throne with an air of power and authority. Faceless and sporting two bull’s horns atop his hood, he’s shrouded in a garment of purple, with a 6-pointed star affixed to his breast. He holds a chain in his left hand which bears a 5-pointed star, or Pentagram. Nearby stands a lit candle of the same purple as his robe, and an alert wolf rests at his feet. The skulls, wolf, the color purple, and the Pentagram all have ties to the suit of Pentacles; while his horns and the sign etched into the throne (right above his head) are symbols of Taurus.

In Phantasmagoria, the Vampyress represents “…Venus, sitting attentively at the feet of the Ancient Teacher…” Notice she’s taken a bite of the fruit from the Tree of Knowledge which is growing behind the Hierophant. I perceive a different scenario unfolding here…

Like many in power (religious or secular), I see a slave or captive bowing her head in subservience. Partaking of the “fruit of knowledge”, she well understands her situation and powerlessness. She’s laid a purple rose before The Hierophant in supplication. Will the Mage take advantage of his dominance and control, or will he take this acolyte under his wing?

mage

supplication

Wherever there are institutions and organizations, duplicity and corruption abound. Witness the mind-controlling pap the media expels, the social structures (such as marriage and religion) that rely on group-think and/or approved behavior, or even the control-freak next door. Rise up and look The Hierophant straight in the face, even if he doesn’t have one, and ask him to be your Mentor. You don’t have to kow-tow to anyone or anything to acquire knowledge and enlightenment.
