National Today:
Black cats could use a good spin doctor. They seldom get positive publicity even though they’re just as adorable as other cats. So, show your love August 17 on Black Cat Appreciation Day. Superstitions play a big part, of course. Long ago, many linked black cats to to witchcraft, and the reputation stuck. People still think it’s bad luck if a black cat walks in front of you. On the plus side, many owners believe them to be more empathic and instinctive than other breeds. Pop culture, at least, seems to love black cats. Check out the cartoon Felix the Cat, the sarcastic Thackery Binx in the Halloween movie “Hocus Pocus,” and Salem in “Sabrina the Teenage Witch.”
