Happy Caturday! (1.31.2020)

puss
n. a cat (especially as a form of address)

The term “puss” is the root of the principal word for “cat” in the Romanian term pisica and the root of secondary words in Lithuanian (puz) and Low German puus. Some scholars suggest that “puss” could be imitative of the hissing sound used to get a cat’s attention.

It’s been almost three years since I published the last Caturday Post. This is LOOOOONG overdue…

Most of us are familiar with superstitions surrounding BLACK CATS, but did you know WHITE CATS also suffer from typecasting?

From White Cat World

“A study by researchers at the University of California, Berkeley, showed that humans often judged domestic cats by the color of their coats. A study in the official journal of the International Society for Anthrozoology shows how feline typecasting (what we might call profiling) can have a negative impact of adoption rates.

The study found that orange cats and bi-colored cats were characterized as friendly, which improved adoption rates, while white cats, black cats and tricolor cats were regarded as being more antisocial…”

  1. In the UK owning a white cat will lead to a loss of wealth, while in Russia it’s believed to BRING prosperity.
  2. In the US dreaming of a white cat or seeing one on the road during the day means good luck, but it’s bad luck to see one at night.
  3. White cats make bad mothers (this may have started with the fact that many white cats are deaf or partially deaf).
  4. The English also believe that white cats hold grudges.
  5. English schoolchildren believe seeing a white cat on the way to school is sure to bring trouble. To avert bad luck, they must either spit, or turn around completely and make the sign of the cross. (What’s up with the UK!?!)
