We’re losing the battle

Last month we celebrated the 10th Annual Global Tiger Day. Today it appears we are losing the battle trying to save another big cat.

Today is World Lion Day and these regal cats are on the brink of extinction. Just 100 years ago, over 200,000 lions existed in the wilds of Africa. Today it’s estimated only 20,000 remain. What’s worse, over the course of the last century 43% of the lion population declined during the past two decades. 77,400 lions GONE in the span of 20 years. That’s 3,870 per year which means these cats could be EXTINCT in 5 years!  Click here to learn more about the efforts being taken to save the African lion.

Panthera’s team of big cat experts has answered some of your most frequently asked questions about lion behavior, conservation and culture.

Panthera is a non-profit organization whose efforts are focused on protecting and conserving the world’s largest felines (Creatures which are particularly dear to my heart.) around the world.

“Panthera is the only organization in the world devoted exclusively to the conservation of the world’s wild cats. Our team of leading biologists and law enforcement experts develop innovative strategies to address the dire threats facing cheetahs, jaguars, leopards, lions, pumas, snow leopards, and tigers.

We are on the front lines, fighting to stop poaching, prevent conflict with people, conserve wild cat habitats, and reduce unsustainable legal hunting. These proven strategies don’t just protect wild cats—they also protect their vast landscapes and the endless variety of life within them. These wild places are crucial to our planet’s health—and our own.”

What I’m Reading (8.3.2020)

Happy National Watermelon Day *

Santa Clara County’s libraries still remain closed due to the MADNESS; however Santa Clara city’s Main Library has curbside pick-up/drop-off. I never threw away my SCLibrary card and after having them set-up an online account for me, it was a piece of cake to put holds on available books. (- and when I run across a book I want to read I add it to my “For Later Shelf”.)

This weekend I checked out:

  1. Kicking & Dreaming: A Story of Heart, Soul, and Rock & Roll
    by Ann and Nancy Wilson
  2. Death’s Excellent Vacation is a collection of short stories by Charlaine Harris and 12 others. I’m a big fan of author Charlaine Harris (of Sookie Stackhouse fame).
  3. I ALSO am a rabid reader of all the Warrior Cats novels. (Quelle surprise.) In addition to her series, Erin Hunter has also written what she calls “Super Edition” books which chronicle the backgrounds of individual Warrior Cats.
    I picked-up Hawkwing’s Journey.
  4. Lastly, I’m re-reading The Plant Paradox Cookbook by Dr. Steven Gundry, M.D.
(One of these days I’ll actually buy my own copy.)

Tell me, what’s on YOUR summer reading list?
What kick-ass books would you like to recommend?

* I like Tajin sprinkled on top of fresh watermelon (In fact, I’m enjoying some as I write this…), but here are more ideas on how to serve this healthy (and low-cal) summer treat:
