Iron Maiden
“Wasted Years”

From the album Somewhere in Time (1986)

In 1979/1980, visual artist Derek Riggs created the macabre mascot named Eddie The Head.
Since then, Eddie has been an integral part of the stage and media image of the group.

The first time I saw Iron Maiden in concert was March 21, 1985 at the Cow Palace (SF). Twisted Sister opened for them. I was there to see TS and knew zip about Maiden. Both bands had great stage presence but I was particularly impressed with Iron Maiden’s Egyptian-themed stage. It was their World Slavery Tour and it would become one of the most elaborate stage setups of its time: The Highs and Lows of Iron Maiden’s Massive ‘World Slavery’ Tour

On the their Seventh Tour of a Seventh Tour (tour) I was excited to see the band perform VERY CLOSE to where I lived at the time: Shoreline Amphitheater (Mtn View). June 5, 1988 it was and a great show, too. This time around, not only was I familiar with their songs I used them in my Mëtal Aerobix classes. Oh, and Steve Harris is my favorite bass player. Ever. Feckin’ flying fingers.

Dickinson’s one of the greatest vocalists of the genre and their music never disappoints. However, if I had to choose my favorite Iron Maiden song it would be “Wasted Years”. \m/\m/

From the coast of gold
Across the seven seas
I’m travelin’ on far and wide
But now it seems
I’m just a stranger to myself
And all the things I sometimes do
It isn’t me but someone else

I close my eyes and think of home
Another city goes by in the night
Ain’t it funny how it is?
You never miss it till it’s gone away
And my heart is lying there
And will be till my dying day

So, understand
Don’t waste your time
Always searching for those wasted years
Face up… make your stand
And realize
You’re living in the golden years

Too much time on my hands
I got you on my mind
Can’t ease this pain, so easily
When you can’t find the words to say
It’s hard to make it through another day
And it makes me wanna cry
And throw my hands up to the sky

So, understand
Don’t waste your time
Always searching for those wasted years
Face up… make your stand
And realize
You’re living in the golden years

[Guitar Solo]

So, understand
Don’t waste your time
Always searching for those wasted years
Face up… make your stand
And realize
You’re living in the golden years

So, understand
Don’t waste your time
Always searching for those wasted years
Face up… make your stand
And realize
You’re living in the golden years

  1. I didn’t realize Bruce Dickenson was a history professor until recently when Iron Maiden’s “Alexander the Great” figured prominently in a hilarious scene in Slow Horses. I looked up the song and ended up going down the rabbit hole on Iron Maiden and their frequent references to history and antiquity.

Needless to say it would be awesome to have him as a professor.
