What’s Rockin’ My World (5.1.2024)

What was trending at Chez Rock Vixen
during the month of April, 2024

Diego and I shared a birthday and I lit a white candle that day in his memory, letting it burn until I closed up shop and went downstairs for the evening. I still miss you, my Panther Boy.

I pulled a Magickal card for the coming year. (It’s now wallpapering my laptop screen.), and the following week we embarked on another wine-tasting trip: “Under the Tuscan Sun” (Total Wine).

I have fully embraced seeds. Currently I have more sprouts growing on the windowsill – right next to some lettuce seedlings! Target is selling organic mushroom kits. Of course, I couldn’t resist… I’ve now got mushrooms growing! The kit is more expensive than purchasing the mushrooms at the Farmers Market, but it’s kinda fun. So, more for the experience than the end result. However, I’m very behind in repotting houseplants, especially the Carnies, so I’m making a concerted effort to push forward on those projects. The Concrete Jungle is shaping up but there’s always more to do.

There is always something to do.
A gardener should have nine times as many lives as a cat.

Earth Day 2024: Unveiling the Ecological Toll of War and Genocide
“As Earth Day approaches, prepare for the annual spectacle (Bread & Circuses) of U.S. lawmakers donning their environmentalist hats, waxing poetic about their love for the planet while disregarding the devastation their actions wreak. The harsh reality is that alongside their hollow pledges lies a trail of destruction fueled by military aggression and imperial ambitions, all under the guise of national security.”
Let us take a moment to reflect and contemplate on our thoughts and actions. What lies are we conveniently buying into? I for one reject the empty rhetoric of “environmentalism”.

Oh, and the New Moon/Solar Eclipse happened on the 8th and (surprise, surprise) the Earth’s still in one piece. (Though the eclipse was unlucky for some, it was very lucky for me.)

Your Tarot card for May

Well…well…well…
Two Major Arcana cards in a row: The Chariot last month
and now The Tower turns up for May.

Major Arcana Tarot cards represent karmic influences and big archetypal themes. Unlike those of the Minor Arcana, these 22 cards carry lessons that are unavoidable. In other words, you have no choice in the matter and must face whatever will be thrown at you.

The Tower is the Planetary Trump of Mars (ruled by Aries) and symbolizes sudden upheavals and dramatic change that forces us to re-evaluate EVERYTHING. This card is also called the “Tower of Truth and Liberation”. The destruction of the old and obsolete is necessary in order to make room for something better, and The Tower does this by giving us a swift kick in the ass – or by knocking us upside the head with a brick. Illusions are being stripped away. People are going to reveal their true selves.

Trying to hold too tightly to the status quo can prove disastrous. Instead, roll with the changes…

What’s Rockin’ My World (4.1.2024)

What was trending at Chez Rock Vixen
during the month of March, 2024

The month kicked-off with a wonderful four-course feast hosted by two of our friends in honor of Tim’s birthday. (Got to try grappa for the first time.) The Boyz got Tim Tales from the Gutter and I took him out for a night of drinks and comedy starring our favorite comedian, Don McMillan.

Every now and again we stop at Mission City Grill on our way back from the Campbell’s Farmers Market. Their über mixologist, Arturo, crafts TWO unique signature cocktails each weekend. Recently I enjoyed the White Sangria – made with their homemade white wine.

The Roku Channel keeps dropping shows and channels like nobody’s business. Recently, they premiered the Universal Monsters Channel – a misnomer because they show movies produced by other studios, as well as Universal. Needless to say, I’ve been watching a lot of really cool horror movies… I’ve also been watching My Cat From Hell. Although there’s a lot of scripted dramatization, I often come away having learned something new and feel blessed by how well the two cats engage in this household and with each other.

March did indeed come in like a lion and out like a lamb because it was absolutely beautiful Easter Sunday. I am absolutely jonesing for the weather to settle (It’s been rain off-and-on all month.) so I can start gardening in earnest.

New genomic techniques? We’ve been here before.
“There have been no published studies assessing the health and environmental risks of any gene-edited foods, including those already marketed, such as the gene-edited tomatoes in Japan that are claimed to help lower blood pressure. • Good News! Several GMO companies are TANKING:
Perfect Day, Upside Foods, AquaBounty, and Pairwise. 👍

The Non-GMO Project’s Standard defines all crops and products developed using biotechnology, including new gene-editing techniques (such as CRISPR), as GMOs.

In the US, fresh produce having a label containing a 4-digit number are Non-GMO/Bioengineered BUT grown using chemical pesticides/fertlizers – while those with a 5-digit number beginning with “9” are Organic. Which means they are grown without the chemicals and are Non-GMO/Bioengineered. If you don’t see these labels AND the produce is not marked as “USDA Organic” or “Non-GMO Project Verified” assume it is GMO/Bioengineered. At your Farmers Market, don’t be afraid to ask questions.

Additionally, while all transgenic organisms are GMOs, not all GMOs are transgenic. The key difference between GMO and transgenic organism is that GMO is an organism that has an artificially altered genome, while the transgenic organism is a GMO that has an altered genome containing a DNA sequence or gene from a different species.

What’s Rockin’ My World (3.1.2024)

What was trending at Chez Rock Vixen
during the month of February, 2024

This ad played before a Megadeth video on YouTube. Jason Momoa rocks!!! (Beefcake)
(I can watch this over and over…and have)

Stupid me, it was my fault. After bringing a King Cake home from Linardi’s bakery, I sliced a piece for myself and went upstairs, leaving the cake in its bakery box on the counter. A couple of hours later I came back downstairs to find the lid on the box open and a HUGE swath of cake gone. I did what I should’ve done in the first place: Moved it to a glass cake stand with heavy lid. I knew who the culprit was, too. As the night progressed, I could tell Brandon wasn’t feeling well. Late that night, he left a river of diarrhea in the cat box for me to clean up. (Little shite.) I need to get used to having a food-obsessed feline in the house. A first for me.

Valemtime’s Day was low-key although I did get this:

(Better than a box of chocolates any day. 🤘)

‘Kayso, in preparation for National Drink Wine with Your Cat Week (Feb 19-25), I bought a CatWine Pawty Pack. We opened the MosCato first. It smelled like rotten eggs! Neither of the cats seemed put-off by the smell, however, they didn’t want to try it. We opened the Pinot Meow. Brandon was unimpressed (then again, he doesn’t like catnip) and Ramses was only interested in licking it off my fingers. (Not giving up, though. We still have two bottles to sample: Catbernet and Purrseco.)

The weather on February 23-25 was beautiful, so I got some work done in the Concrete Jungle. (With Master Gardener, Ramses, assisting.) Where we live the danger of frost is long past and it looks like the lowest it will get at night is mid-40s. This means I could do some heavy pruning without worrying about tender new growth – so I did! Heavy pruning, that is. YIKES! The Green Dragon (Pinellia tripartita) is already popping up. It needs to be repotted but I’d waited too long. The roots are so compacted and the soil is so saturated due to the rain storms that it needs to dry out before I can extract it from the pot.

My Green Dragon comes back larger every year… It’s gorgeous!

Friday night, Skeleton Cru opened for The Scorched Ones. Saw some old friends and made some new ones.  ♫♪ He’s just a Devil Kitty, with catnip on his mind. ♫♪

That Sunday we did our usual rounds of the Campbell Farmers Market, had breakfast at a new place (They serve “bottomless mimosas”.), and sojourned to Summerwinds, Cupertino, where I picked-up some chervil and the most beautiful sorrel (below).

In other plant news: SHE’S HE-RE! (I don’t expect her to bloom now, but I’m keeping my fingers crossed I’ll see flowers Winter 2024/2025: Plant Lust::Hellebore ‘Onyx Odyssey’)

There are 29 days in February, which makes 2024 a Leap Year. In Ireland and Britain, it is a tradition that women may propose marriage only in leap years.

Apparently I cannot get enough of this movie because this is the fourth time I’ve watched it – although this time with Tim. (I should just buy the DVD already…)

How on God’s green earth, did central planners miss the food revolution of the past twenty years? Did they think only they were foodies? Soil restoration will not only bring back a healthy bio-system, (it will) turn food into its once nutritious self, restore rural life and ground water. If feminism was “pro-woman,” they would see it as a cause of celebration but they do not. A century of gradual reforestation across the American East and Southeast has kept the region cooler. “Moving forward, we need to think about tree planting not just as a way to absorb carbon dioxide but also the cooling effects in adapting for climate change, to help cities be resilient against these very hot temperatures.” well…well…well… The fact is trees DO absorb carbon dioxide (CO2, which we breathe out) and turn it into oxygen.

Non-GMO Project ALERTS:

  • Guide to GMOs in beauty products
  • Ethos pro-GMO candy bars feature GM fruit (such as papaya) or promote crops for which GM versions are in development (i.e., cacao), and include sugar from GM sugar beets. A Fresh Look was part of a $4 million campaign launched in 2017 by the sugar beet industry to promote sugar from GM sugar beets.
  • Chocolate that features ingredients produced through synbio

    Tomorrow Bar (Oodaalolly)
Oobli chocolate bars (Oobli, formerly Joywell Foods)

What’s Rockin’ My World (2.1.2024)

What was trending at Chez Rock Vixen
during the month of January, 2024

Before I get on with last month’s wrap-up I’d like to call your attention to a new category, “Posts or Pages I updated“, listed below. Any NEW Pages will be included there, as well. (Unlike Posts, subscribers/followers never receive notices of Pages being created.)

Well, as is normally the case January was pretty uneventful. Had some friends over on the 15th to watch The Warriors (lose). Ramses proved to be the purrrfect feline host, however, Brandon preferred to watch the activity from the landing on the stairs. On the plus side: Neither cat has shown a tendency to hide under the bed when people come to visit.

Speaking of Ramses, although he’s always had a sensitive digestive system some issues over the past month or so has me thinking he may have the feline equivalent of IBS. This is something to keep an eye on. I’m given to understand that Siamese cats have this tendency and since he obviously has many physical traits of the Siamese/Oriental Shorthair this makes sense. It might be stress related. I am keeping notes.

The Wine 101 event we attended at Total Wine was more of a class and we learned a lot. At The Quarter Note I ordered white wine and although I didn’t see the bottle I got distinct notes of both apple and pear, so I guess I’m paying more attention. (Thanks, Total Wine!)

I mentioned that I was dipping my toe in uncharted territory by growing China Rose Radish sprouts in a jar (January 20, 2024). Mistakes were made (I used ALL the seeds in the packet.) and I threw caution to the wind by spreading the seeds on a paper towel to dry. When they began to sprout a light bulb went on over my head. “If they’re growing outside a glass jar,” I said to myself, “Why do I need a glass jar?” So I placed some seeds in a shallow dish which I lined with a paper towel and kept them damp by spraying them down a couple times a day (Or whenever I stepped into the kitchen.). I found this allowed good air flow and prevented them from getting moldy. Here’s what they looked like after 10 days:

I think my way of growing sprouts was pretty successful, don’t you? The plan going forward is to repeat this same process.

Got the opportunity to test some spellwork I performed back in December,
with positive results. Thank Goddess I didn’t have to use a back-up spell.

If your cellphone can be used to detonate a bomb, why are we being allowed to own/use/carry them – as their use could constitute an act of terrorism?  Imagine this, if you will: An app has been covertly downloaded to your cellphone that will, once certain criteria have been met, set-off a bomb. Now imagine that this app has been loaded onto hundreds (or thousands) of cellphones around the world, and are linked to explosive devices planted in strategic locations around the world. Managed Health Care
[I]nsurance companies began hiring doctors, at more money than they could make ‘practicing’ medicine. I remember reading about one of those doctors, who finally quit because she just couldn’t take it anymore. Humana paid her a very good salary, but it was based, along with her bonuses, on how often she determined that the person didn’t need the procedure or medicine they wanted and needed. Her conscience finally surfaced.

FDA’s approval process may favor drug companies over consumers — and FDA-approval does not guarantee safety. In fact, Big Pharma actually pays for the majority of drug safety reviews, provides the FDA with safety data for the review and has the option to have drugs approved faster with fewer clinical trials.

Nature’s adaptability

  • Anna’s Hummingbirds (which we have around here) stay put in winter, resisting the cold or entering a temporary state of torpor if weather conditions get too bad, while Monarch butterflies travel up to 3,000 miles to shelter together in the mountains of Central Mexico. In winter, many bat species use a combination of migrating and hibernating. Two of the strangest cold-weather survival tricks are found in snow flies, which produce antifreeze and self-amputate their legs to prevent freezing. (National Wildlife, Winter 2024)
  • Farmer Combats Flooding by Returning Creeks to Nature: “Wildlife That Has Come is Phenomenal” In the UK, farmers are combatting flooding by returning areas of their farms to a more natural state, and seeing the benefits not only in wildlife returning but in flood mitigation.

Leave the leaves! “Blowing or hauling away leaves and other good organic material – then buying mulch and compost the following spring – makes little sense. Wildlife and soil need these materials and nutrients for winter food, shelter and nesting materials. (National Wildlife, Winter 2024)  I leave piles of fallen leaves from the surrounding trees in the corners of the Concrete Jungle, for I’ve discovered salamanders will nest in them.

Just Say No to GMO!

“Hello, I’d like to eat a genetically modified animal today.
Do you have one on the menu?”

Roundup: Bayer, BASF lobby push to scrap safety rules on new GM crops – even if they increase pesticide use

Ledprona: “Gene silencing” pesticide approved in USby the EPA.
The Pollinator Stewardship Council warns that the unintended consequences of Ledprona on non-target species could expand beyond pollinators (such as bees) to entire populations and ecosystems.  Of course, the bought-and-paid-for EPA could care less – just one example of a useless government agency that needs to be disbanded ASAP.

Genetically modified crops aren’t a solution to climate change, despite what the biotech industry says.  The ONLY solution to the “climate change” agenda is to eradicate everyone pushing it. (That’s right, I said it!)

Academics, scientists call to scrap gene-editing proposal
More than 70 academics and scientists have signed a letter asking for a full rejection of the European Commission’s proposal to deregulate new GMOs (products of new genomic techniques or NGTs), on the grounds that it threatens an “irreversible change” to our ecosystems and food systems.

Policymakers should respect organic movement’s choice not to use NGTs
DAMN RIGHT!

Non-GMO Project ALERTS:

  • 2023: The Year in Review
  • Norfolk Plant Sciences has received support from the FDA regarding its genetically-engineered purple tomato. Compared to TRUE heirloom tomatoes, it looks artificial in every way. Remember, GM food products will come with a branding (label) so they shouldn’t be hard to spot – even IF they begin appearing at one’s Farmers Market – and when in doubt, ASK.
  • Seed Sovereignty: We’re Losing Our Seed Breeders
“Because you can’t save [the seeds] yourself as a farmer, you’re basically passing off any level of seed sovereignty to a corporation.”
  • GMO sugar cane joined the USDA’s List of Bioengineered Foods.
Just one more food item we need to be careful of – purchasing only those products that contain ORGANIC sugar cane or are approved by the Non-GMO Food Project. (Note: Even Smart & Final’s cane sugar is approved by them. It pays to pay attention.)

What’s Rockin’ My World (1.1.2024)

What was trending at Chez Rock Vixen
during the month of December, 2023

Before I get on with last month’s wrap-up I’d like to call your attention to a new category, “Posts or Pages I updated“, listed below. Any NEW Pages will be included there, as well. (Unlike Posts, subscribers/followers never receive notices of Pages being created.)

What with us losing many beloved kitties during the month of December – which included both Ortoloni and Diego, rushing Tim to the hospital late one night with gallstones, and helping him recover from hernia surgery just two years ago, Decembers haven’t always been merry. However, this December was full of health and happiness, and all of us here at Chez Rock Vixen enjoyed the festivities of the season.

If there’s something specific I need or want to address,
I often wait for the words to come to me – which usually happens as I’m waking up.
The Universe giving me the green light to proceed – which I did at the December Full Moon.

It has everything I want in a horror film: Unique storyline (complete with plot twists), decent dialogue, fast-paced, just the right amount of gore, killer make-up and special effects (they went out of their way to incorporate the individuality of the actors into the werewolf transformations), NO CGI, and a hunky villian (Beefcake::Jason Momoa). I may have to add this one to my DVD collection…

Just Say No to GMO!

Roundup: American Academy of Pediatrics advises avoiding GMO foods where practical due to glyphosate residues

Bill Gates/Lobby Groups: Alliance for Science’s chief lobbyist for GMOs, Mark Lynas, teamed up with two co-authors to publish in a peer-reviewed journal an article that equated people who criticise GMOs with those who spread “misinformation” on climate change, COVID, and vaccines.  The principal funder of the Alliance for Science’s pro-GMO PR work is the Gates Foundation, which has invested heavily in GMOs and, in the past, directly in Monsanto, raising the question of whether the Alliance really promotes “science” or GMO industry profits.  All gmwatch articles on Alliance for Science

Researchers disown their own genetically engineered tree
In a major turnaround, the American Chestnut Foundation (TACF) has announced it is discontinuing its development of the genetically engineered (GE, GM, or genetically modified) American chestnut tree called “Darling 58”.

New GM techniques can create different genetic changes [genome] to those from conventional breeding, say scientists
Gene editing technologies like CRISPR/Cas are being labeled as “NGTs”.

Non-GMO Project ALERTS:

Your Tarot card for January

Lord of Material Trouble

This card tells of the destruction of an order or structure that has become stifling. Often the structure is something we have been clinging to, and is a source of security. This makes the breakdown of its form very painful for us; the sudden change, loss, or conflict can fill us with anxiety.

However, the light of this card is that the destruction of our security is the path towards greater peace and clears the way for renewal. [1]

If you are going to SINCERELY seek The Truth, The World is going to turn on you, and all the people who compromised their integrity… for a place at the trough… are going to scream at you and call you names. This is known as projection, and you can almost always tell what is wrong with someone by the things they accuse you of. [source]
